چکیده

Embedded system design is a co-design of domains requiring domain-specific processors and a flexible platform architecture to support them. In this report we describe the design, the integrated HW/SW architecture platform and the associated design methods for the Thumbpod case study. It is a secure embedded system, which uses cryptographic and biometric signal processing acceleration. This report presents the concept of HW/SW acceleration transparency, a systematic design method to accelerate Java functions in both software and hardware. An example of acceleration transparency for a Rijndael encryption function is presented. The embedded prototype hardware platform is also described. Acceleration transparency yields software and hardware performance gains of 333X. This design won an honorable mentioning at the student design contest of the 40 Design Automation Conference in June 2003.

Quest-V: A Virtualized Multikernel for Safety-Critical Real-Time Systems

Modern processors are increasingly featuring multiple cores, as well as support for hardware virtualization. While these processors are common in desktop and server-class computing, they are less prevalent in embedded and real-time systems. However, smartphones and tablet PCs are starting to feature multicore processors with hardware virtualization. If the trend continues, it is possible that f...

Application Driven Design of Embedded Real-time Image Processors

Real-time image processing systems become more and more embedded in systems for industrial inspection, autonomous robots, photo-copying, traffic control, automotive control, surveillance, security, and the like. Starting in the 80’s many systems mainly for low-level image processing have been developed. The architectures range from framegrabbers with attached Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), t...

Ultra-Low-Energy DSP Processor Design for Many-Core Parallel Applications

Background and Objectives: Digital signal processors are widely used in energy constrained applications in which battery lifetime is a critical concern. Accordingly, designing ultra-low-energy processors is a major concern. In this work and in the first step, we propose a sub-threshold DSP processor. Methods: As our baseline architecture, we use a modified version of an existing ultra-low-power...

A Fault Observant Real-Time Embedded Design for Network-on-Chip Control Systems

Performance and time to market requirements cause many realtime designers to consider components, off the shelf (COTS) for real-time systems. Massive multi-core embedded processors with network-on-chip (NoC) designs to facilitate core-to-core communication are becoming common in COTS. These architectures benefit real-time scheduling, but they also pose predictability challenges. In this work, w...

Embedded Multi-core Processors

Designing multi-threaded and multi-core processor architectures has become one of the most challenging projects for computer scientists in the last few years. But not only the design of such architectures for desktop computers, servers, or high performance computing (HPC) clusters has been investigated in a sophisticated manner, also in the area of embedded systems, researchers have started to ...
